What is ISO 55001?

ISO 55001 is the international standard for Asset Management Systems (AMS). It provides a structured framework for organisations to manage the lifecycle of physical and non-physical assets — from acquisition through operation, maintenance, and disposal — in a way that balances cost, risk, and performance to achieve organisational objectives.

First published in 2014 (replacing PAS 55) and revised in 2024, ISO 55001 is widely adopted by asset-intensive industries including utilities, transport, mining, oil and gas, manufacturing, and public infrastructure. Certification demonstrates that your organisation manages its assets systematically and makes evidence-based decisions about asset investment, maintenance, and replacement.

  • Aligns asset management with organisational strategic objectives via a Strategic Asset Management Plan (SAMP)
  • Covers the full asset lifecycle: acquisition, operation, maintenance, renewal, and disposal
  • Risk-based approach to asset criticality, condition assessment, and investment prioritisation
  • Integrates with ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 through Annex SL harmonised structure
  • 2024 revision strengthens climate resilience, data-driven decision-making, and circular economy requirements
  • Applicable to physical, financial, information, and intangible assets across all sectors
